October 12, day 12

“Our culture has filled our heads but emptied our hearts, stuffed our wallets but starved our wonder. It has fed our thirst for facts but not for meaning or mystery. It produces "nice" people, not heroes.” ― Peter Kreeft

While traveling to Altotting we stopped in Erding to visit the Church of the Holy Blood- the site of the Eucharistic Miracle from the 17th century.  However the church was closed for repairs.  We visited the Shrine of Altotting (Chapel of Grace) which is known for the many healings said to have taken place.  The Shrine of Our Lady of Altotting, dating back to 660 A.D., houses an image of the Black Madonna, which was carved from lindenwood. It is a popular pilgrimage site following a miraculous recovery of a boy who drowned in 1489. The boy’s mother laid his lifeless body at the feet of the statue, and he came to life after she begged Mary’s intercession for a miracle. Other miracles have been reported at this site since that time.  We had Mass at the Monastery of St. Konarad and returned to Munich.  Altotting is sometimes referred to as the German Fatima.
